Before You Visit a Curtain Shop in Panjim
Most people visit a curtain shop without knowing what they need โ and end up either buying the wrong thing or spending more time than necessary. This guide gives you everything you need to know before you walk through the door at our St. Inez showroom in Panaji, so you can make confident decisions and get the best possible result for your home.
Step 1: Measure Your Windows Correctly
This is the most important step and the one most people get wrong. Here's the correct method:
- Width: Measure the width of the window opening and add at least 15โ20 cm on each side to allow the curtains to stack back fully when open without blocking any daylight. For a window opening of 150 cm, your curtain rod should be at least 180โ190 cm wide.
- Height: Decide where to hang your curtains. For modern proportions, hang the rod 10โ20 cm above the window opening โ or all the way at the ceiling for maximum height. Measure from the bottom of the rod down to where you want the curtain to finish (floor, sill, or 1โ2 cm above the sill).
- Fullness: Curtains need to be wider than the measurement to look full and luxurious when closed. For standard fullness, the fabric width should be 2ร the rod width. For pencil pleat or pinch pleat (classic luxury look), use 2.5ร the rod width.
Step 2: Choose Your Heading Style
- Eyelet / Grommet: Modern, casual look. Simple to hang and draw. Works well in contemporary Goa apartments.
- Pencil Pleat: Classic, versatile look. Creates a series of uniform thin pleats. Suits traditional and transitional interiors.
- Pinch Pleat: The most formal and luxurious option โ creates structured groups of folds. Ideal for Panaji heritage homes or formal living rooms.
- Tab Top / Rod Pocket: Casual and relaxed โ works for kitchens, informal spaces, and Goa-style relaxed living areas.
Step 3: Decide on Lining
In Goa, lining is not optional โ it's essential. Here's why and what to choose:
- Standard Cotton Lining: Protects fabric from UV degradation, improves insulation, and gives curtains a neater appearance from outside. Essential for all curtains in Goa.
- Blackout Lining: Blocks virtually all light. Highly recommended for bedrooms in Goa โ the sun rises as early as 5:30 AM in summer, and without blackout lining, your bedroom will be bright long before your alarm goes off. Also reduces heat gain significantly.
- Thermal / Interlining: An extra layer of padding between the face fabric and lining. Creates a sumptuous, heavy feel and provides additional insulation โ recommended for air-conditioned rooms where heat retention matters.
Step 4: Pick the Right Fabric for Your Room
Refer to our fabric guide (see above) for Goa-specific fabric recommendations. In general:
- Bedrooms: Polyester blackout lining + decorative face fabric of your choice. Blackout is non-negotiable in Goa.
- Living rooms: Sheer voile for filtering light + a heavier drape panel for evening privacy. Layering is both functional and beautiful.
- Bathrooms / Kitchens: Moisture-resistant polyester or vinyl. Easy-clean surface is important.
- Verandas: Outdoor-rated solution-dyed acrylic only.
